2015 Subaru Legacy - Transmission issues

Welcome to the forum, which by the way is a world wide open forum, you need to edit and remove any personal information from your post…

Next I advise you to take it to a dealer to be checked out, or a independent transmission shop, if it is low on ATF (transmission fluid) then you probably have a leak that requires repairing, if internal, well it will have to be rebuilt or replaced, or could be a TCM issue or even a valve body issue, either way it needs to be checked out ASAP… But it might just need to be serviced…

It looks like you have a Lineartronic CVT transmission and it should be very smooth…

There could also be TSB(s) on it… I am sure if so someone will post them soon…

Long out of warranty. Did your brother ask for advice?

Turns out there is a recall for a leaking transmission.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V502000

If it wasn’t addressed in the past this might be the problem. Note that this recall was issued August 10, 2015. Given the time between the notice and now I’m not sure whether Subaru will pay for transmission damage due to a leak. Even though they will fix the leak. The tail pipe is below the transmission and the possibility of fire due to ATF dripping in the tail pipe.

There is (or was) also a Tech Service Bulletin that involved valve body replacement for these Subaru CVT transmissions. If I recall correctly the symptoms were similar to yours.

Googling WQU-56R might turn-up something useful. I’d be surprised however if any applicable recall work hasn’t already been done. If I had this problem, as a first step, I’d ask my shop or dealership to check the transmission fluid. It must be at the correct level and in good condition for the transmission to work properly.

Well, I see a Staff member changed this from an Ask Someone to a Maintenance/Repairs and did not feel the need to edit the OP’s post to not show personal information…
