Have the front steering/suspension components inspected for wear.
The noise could be coming from a worn ball joint.

Rhythmic clicking = axle CV joints, sporadic ‘popping’ = worn ball joint or other component. Either way, get it checked out, by a mechanic of your chosen religion…
Minor interference between the steering wheel and the steering column ass’y can cause that. It is worse when the passenger compartment is hot b/c the car was parked in the sun?
