2010 Nissan Murano - Flickering oil light

Red oil can light is flickering. What is that telling me?

If the light flickers while the vehicle is in motion, the oil level may be too low. Check the oil level and add motor oil to the vehicle as needed, and continue to monitor the light.

If the oil level was good then you may have a bad sensor or a bad oil pump or internal (bearing) failure and you need to take it to a trusted auto repair shop and have it properly diagnosed… ASAP…
If you are hearing any kind of knocking noise then have the vehicle towed, do not drive…

If oil level was low and the light stays off, then you need to keep a better eye on the oil level, it may be using oil or leaking oil…

It’s telling you to read your owners manual, and if you don’t have one, get one.

Definitely not something to ignore and hope it goes away. If you are not sure what to do after reading the owners manual, suggest to schedule your Nissan into a good shop asap.

The flickering can mean low engine oil pressure. Also, low oil pressure can be caused by a variety of issues, such as low oil level, a failing oil pump, or oil system blockages. Check your engine oil level first, if it’s low, top it up.

If your oil level has not gone down and/or caused engine damage, the next common reason for the flickering light is an oil pressure sensor that has gone bad. They are usually near the oil filter on the engine block, usually inexpensive, and usually easy to replace. Unplug wire, unscrew old sensor, screw in new one, reattach wire.
Good luck!

Is the engine making any abnormal noises? Have you checked the oil level on the dipstick? If the engine sounds fine, and the oil is full, it’s probably just a loose connection at the oil pressure switch or sender. If the engine is making ticking, rattling, or knocking noises, it’s time to start budgeting for a replacement vehicle, or a replacement engine.
