You might be hearing the clutch throw out bearing failing.

Be nice to the car. Wash it. Pat it on the head. Then maybe it won’t be cranky. I think it just feels neglected.
Other than that…uh…maybe describe it better. I have no idea what a “cranky sound” means. Presumably this is a manual transmission? What does “cranky” sound like?
My 2yo granddaughter can show you, especially just after her nap.
