2007 Mercury Montego can’t shift out of park

Can not get the shift out of park.

There may be a problem with the brake pedal switch, or the interlock solenoid at the shifter.

If the problem is the brake interlock (you have to press on the brake pedal to shift out of park, that’s a safety feature), there may be an over-ride for that condition. Sometimes it’s a small switch you have to press, located under the steering column. Look in our owner’s manual or google “mercury brake interlock over-ride”, something like that.

Have someone stand behind the car. Push on brake pedal. If no brake lights, replace brake switch.

If the switch is bad, you could connect its two wires. That would put your brake lights on full time and get your car to shift out of park - if that switch is the problem. This is only a test.
