2006 Ford F-150 - "Can't get my car out of second gear..."

the trans is stuck 2nd gear. 2006 f150 fx4 5.4 Eng. automatic will not go in to drive.

How do you know it is stuck in 2nd gear if it won’t go into drive?

Need to check your transmission fluid level…

Do you have a CEL (check engine light) on? Could be in limp (home) mode…

Does the shifter move at all??
Could be a bad shifter, seem to be a lot of them on ebay for some reason, or shift cable binding, or something in the transmission broke…

More info is needed…

This is a potential symptom for a failed or disconnected vacuum modulator (VM); if your transmission even uses a VM that is. It may not. If this symptom occurred w/my older Ford’s C4 automatic transmission, a problematic VM would be my first guess. A failed or disconnected VM could cause poor idle performance, stalling, or a high rpm idle. Do you notice anything like that?

If no VM involvement, my second guess would be some sort of problem with the communication between the driver’s shift lever and the transmission, be it mechanical or electronic. Third guess, an electric solenoid problem. Before considering that failure, be sure to check all transmission related fuses first.
