I have an automatic 02 Impreza wrx and I can put it in any gear but it doesn’t go anywhere at all. If you rev it, it still won’t move even after a couple minutes.
Your transmission is probably shot. How many miles on the car? Check the transmission fluid if you haven’t. It could be low. But most likely you’ll need to have the car towed to a good independent transmission shop.

Agreed; sounds like the trans is shot. At 19 years of age with ? miles and as with most cars the transaxle has likely probably never been serviced. Continuing to rev the engine just makes a bad situation worse.
Pull the ATF dipstick and check the fluid. If it’s brown or black and has a burnt smell it’s transmission decision time.

If that’s the case the OP either has a bad clutch or he doesn’t have an STi.
