2001 Dodge Ram 1500 - Starts hard

Truck turns over can here it clicking but takes 3 turns till it starts.

The next time you go to start the engine, turn the ignition on so the dash light come on for two seconds, and then turn the ignition off.

Repeat this a half dozen times and then try starting the engine.

If the engine starts right up, it points to a problem with the anti drain-back valve on the fuel pump.

Tester

Your post is a little unclear. Are you saying that when you turn the key to the start position, you hear a click, and you have to cycle the key 3 times to get the starter to engage? That would indicate a bad battery connection, starter solenoid, or starter.

If the problem is inconsistent or slow cranking (that rrr rrr rrr sound with the key in “start”), and you don’t want to pay for a lot of testing, there’s a pretty good chance replacing the battery and starter motor will fix it. Are you a gambler Mindy?
