I have an automatic 1998 Neon which doesn’t seem to register that it is in gear. I can put it in park but the car doesn’t turnover or start unless I jiggle the gear shift. I parked at a gas station the other day and when I got out to pump, the car started rolling as if it were in neutral. Its been happening for about a year now with park but now the other gears seem to be effected. I can put it in reverse, but the car won’t move (or will roll) unless I jiggle the shift. Sometimes the car does work normally. Any thoughts? Also, is it dangerous to keep using without fixing?
It sounds like the shift linkage is out of adjustment. Take it to a corner service center and ask that they check the shift linkage for proper adjustment.
