How can you diagnose a thrown rod? Worried this is the issue, but don’t want to risk further damage. Oil is empty right now. There was some leakage where the car was pulled on the side of road. They said they loss engine power and so they pulled over and turned off. It was still running till they turned off engine. We had it towed and weather is clear enough to look at now.

Is there a hole in the engine block?..Thrown Rod!
Was the engine run out of oil and now there is a heavy knocking noise? … Rod Knock!
Either way this car needs a rebuilt engine and a 22 year old car is NOT worth the cost. Sell it for scrap.
