1987 Chrysler New Yorker - dies on turns

2.2 liter turbo, 4 cylinder, fuel injection, 98k miles. Dies on turns; worse when the gas tank isn’t full; mechanic has checked all fuses, plugs, etc. Afraid to take out fuel tank for fear of rust and causing any damage. Any ideas? Someone mentioned there was some sort of indicator in the gas tank and when the gas got below this indicator, that is what is causing the car to die. Loses all power, brakes, etc. And yes… have heard all of the “don’t make a turn” jokes…

You’re going to have to drop the fuel tank. From what you describe, it sounds like the pick-up filter/sock has partially broken off the fuel pump assembly. So when you go around a turn, the filter/sock is seperating away from the fuel pump assembly from the sloshing gas in the tank when the fuel level gets low.

Thanks - I was afraid this was the route we may have to go. Just afraid of what might be under there (rust, etc) and could end up being an expensive job…
