'07 Toyota Yaris or '98 Honda Accord: Recalls

Yup!
If I saw a one-year old vehicle of Brand X sitting on the used car lot of a dealer who is selling Brand Y, I would probably conclude that the former owner of that used car was very unhappy with his Brand X car, and that would give me pause. However, the OP is looking at cars ranging from 15 to 24 years old, and the reasons why the former owners might have chosen to buy a different make of car when they traded them in could probably fill many pages.

When someone is buying an old car, the condition of that car–and its maintenance over the decades–should be the major consideration. Unless a new car dealership has a track record of shady dealings, it shouldn’t matter which new car dealership is selling that old car–which lacks any type of warranty coverage.

However, the “buy here, pay here” used car lots should always be avoided–IMHO.

That sorta works. I drove my 1998 Buick Regal to the Honda dealer in 2005 when I bought my first Accord. I drove the Accord home, and the salesman asked me to move the Buick off their lot ASAP because they didn’t want a car like that on the lot. I laughed and retrieved it later that day when my wife and I could pick it up.

it is the 'buy here, pay here” used car lots" term I do not understand.

Different levels of quality, selection and integrity can be found on new car lots of various manufactures, I doubt old cars like these would be found on a Mercedes or Cadillac lot.

A used car dealer not affiliated with a manufacture that offers in house financing, stereotypically all are corrupt.

Good Grief . I thought everyone new of the Buy Here - Pay Here lots that are such a disaster . They loan money on vehicles they sell at high interest rates . You can be one day late and they might activate a remote unit that will cause your vehicle not to start . Some even keep the title until it is paid in full .

ok i did not focus on the "new car dealer’ part.

Thankfully I did not. Kinda like the payday loan folk. The mob is nicer

I knew a guy who retired to The Philippines because he really liked the women there. He started “partying” too much, grossly overspent his monthly retirement checks, borrowed money from loan sharks, and then failed to pay them back promptly. When he was 3 months overdue, they killed him. :grimacing:

I guess that the mob is pretty much the same all over the world, but at least I haven’t yet heard of a used car dealer who kills customers who are late on their payments.
