What do you think of the new 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Automatic?
I have never owned a diesel car. What should I expect? Will it cost more to repair? Does maintenance cost more?
Is it worth spending an extra $2000 to buy a diesel versus gas car?
Is this a reliable car?
Thanks for the help!
Here’s an estimate of major costs for the 2010 Jetta TDI:
Similar cars have repair cost estimates as little as $800. But they may have higher maintenance costs. The Civic, for instance, will cost $600 more over the first 5 years to maintain. Repair and maintenance costs are equivalent when taken together.
What do you hope to gain for your $2000 extra?? What is the benefit to YOU??
The maintenance on older TDI’s was higher. A friend who owns an early 2000’s tdi jetta states that if you don’t drive 30k-40k miles/year the TDI is not worth it for fuel savings.
VWs have improved to average, as far as repairs, and the TDI would be no better. Only if you drive LOTs of miles/year is the diesel going to be worthwhile, and only if the diesel fuel stays about equal to gas price.
I have a VW 2002 TDI, bought new. As you might guess I am very happy with it. It is my second diesel and third VW.
I can’t say it has saved me any great amount of money. When I had my first diesel and when I bought my current TDI fuel prices for diesel varied by were either about the same or even a little less expensive. That said I doubt if I have saved any money with my current TDI.
For my next car (it may be a while) I don’t know what I will choose. It will depend on what is available and what my needs look like at the time.
I would not hesitate to buy a conventional gasoline or diesel or a hybrid version of either one.
Good Luck.
