The Volkswagen Beetle, Chrysler PT Cruiser and Chevrolet HHR were each assembled in Mexico.

Of course.
The veterans of this forum usually advise getting rid of a European make as soon as the warranty has expired. Most of us know the wisdom of buying Japanese marques, or American marques, or even Korean marques.

Exactly!
I had a hard time getting the janitor at my last school to comprehend that his two ā€œAmericanā€ cars were madeā€“respectivelyā€“in Canada and in Mexico. He was so dense that he refused to believe that an ā€œAmericanā€ car was made anywhere except w/in The US.

Meanwhile, my Subaru was made in The US, as was my brotherā€™s Toyota.

Thatā€™s American. North American.

They were assembled in Mexico made of parts from a few places, including many from the USA.

Neither the new Beatle nor the PT Cruiser were good cars to start with (of course, there were a few good examples) and over the years they havenā€™t gotten better - either is likely to cost many $$ in repairs, quiet possibly more than their purchase price.

Iā€™m not familiar with 2007 Volvos, but have owned several older ones to well past 200kmi and 20 yrs with no serious issues (one now is with a family member whoā€™s well past 250kmi and he doesnā€™t change oil until itā€™s been black for a year (I did it every ~ 4000mi). Parts and dealer labor cost more than some cars, but our total repair costs while we had them were minimal and they will protect you well in an accident and insurance may be low. Our kids learned on and abused them, took them to college in East Coast and Western mountain winters, one was rolled with little damage, and they just ran and ran.
