Tuxedo Park Jeep with faulty speedometer

A recent caller has a Tuxedo Park Jeep whose speedometer reads 40 when it should read 25, and whose odometer is racking up miles at a similarly exaggerated rate.

I think Ray said that the gear that transfers rotation from the cable to the speedometer head might be the right size, or more likely the speedometer head is bad.

Remembering that a kilometer is about 5/8 of a mile, I realized that if the speedo/odo combo is geared to record kilometers the speedometer will indicate 40 if the car is moving at 25mph. Would this be easier/cheaper to correct than a faulty speedometer head?

I left out the important word “not” before the phrase “be the right size.”
