I have a standard transmission and I just bought the used car on 2-24-10. It’s a 2001 Hyundai Elantra. On the 26th my transmission would not get into gear and when it finally did it would only stay in 1st gear. I cound’t get it into 2nd at all. What is wrong?
Can we assume that this condition is identical when the car is off and sitting still? Does the clutch feel “normal”?
If you can shift the transmission normally with the engine NOT RUNNING your clutch has failed and needs replaced.
If you cannot shift the transmission normally with the engine NOT RUNNING you have transmission and/or shifter troubles.
The car kept dying out so I tried a couple of times to shift it into 1st and I really had to push it into gear. It was not a normal shift procedure. After getting into 1st I started the car but the car would not shift into 2nd at all. I had to ride 10 miles to my home in 1st gear on the hwy.
