Transmission issues for a 96 Grand Cherokee

The overdrive will not come on. Any suggestions.

Do you mean that the vehicle won’t shift into overdrive, or the overdrive lockout light won’t come on. The lockout button keeps it from going into overdrive.

When you start from a dead stop it feels like its in a low gear no matter what position the buttons in.I am thinking it is in the button because the light remains on all the time. but does the button control the LED or is the LED fed from some sort of feedback from the transmission. Anyways when you come up to speed it never switch’s to overdrive.

If the ‘OD OFF’ light is on, the transmission will not shift to over-drive. If the button doesn’t turn it back off, there is a problem. It may be a bad button switch, or there may be an issue with the transmission control module. Usually the ‘OD OFF’ light blinks when there is a problem with the controller, but it may just turn on the light and go into ‘limp mode’.

It does start off in low gear no matter it the “overdrive Off” button is on or off. And as long as the light is on it probably will never shift to overdrive. You must have a problem with the switch.
