Tracking down radio makers, in this case a 2003 Chevy Imapla

I’ve had several cars through time, but right now I have a 2003 Chevy Impala. What I’m curious to find out, is who exactly makes the radio in this car.

It appears to be the factory one, from what I can tell.

I want to read more about how it works.

It has features such as telling you the name of the station and/or sometimes the Artist/Song Title. I believe this is technically called “Radio Text”.

How can you find out who makes the radio, for basically any car you can think of?

GM has usually had its radios manufactured by Delco electronics I believe. The text and artists features have been around on radios for many years now and I had it on my car back in 2000. If the car is imported it may be difficult to find who designs the radios, but it shouldn’t be too hard on the American cars with some searching.

I would ask your Dealer, who provides service for OEM radios.I worked for a company in Phx.AZ that did this (clusters and other electronics) business got sold I dont know who is doing it now,but there are others across the country.I was quite suprised at how much OEM radio work was to be done.We did Ford,GM,Chrysler. We had a zone that was our area to service.

It is possible that they may have had more than one supplier for any given year. Those features are not that unusual today.

Have you checked your car’s Owners Manual for info?

If not:

There’s a lot that radio does. You can customize features on your car and its radio. The radio can turn off the “engine oil” life light. It can program replacement key FOB’s and change horn and exterior light responses when locking your car, etc, etc.

You can order a manual if you don’t have one.

That ALONE is one reason why I’d never buy a GM.

Like other cars don’t have other functions integrated with the entertainment systems these days?

Maybe we had better go back to the old days. When I would ride along in my horse and buggy, if the cat’s whisker came off the crystal, the radio wouldn’t play, but the horse kept right on trotting along.

Best bet is asking the local Delco authorized repair outlet. You may get lucky and find it on the radio some place if you take it out. I’ve had Zeneth in my Buicks even. Some of the technical info and so on like schematics is proprietary and they won’t give it out for anything.

Delphi makes GM’s radios.
