I have a 2003 Toyota Highlander that has had a shifting issue for some time now. I know that generally the transmission is at fault, but the circumstances of how it does and doesn’t work is so specific and odd. When I start the car I can drive normally at any speed with no shifting issues. The problem starts when I go above 47mph, and after slowing down to below 13mph. It will then no longer shift to the 5th gear unless I turn the car off and on again. There is no delay needed between restarting the car and the way it works is always exactly the same. Anyone know why this happens? I’d love to get it fixed, but it’s not too much of a hassle using it as is since I know how to “reset” it.
Is the check engine light on? Any others glowing on the dash?
How many miles on this? Has the transmission fluid ever been changed?
Sounds like a torque converter lockup issue. Does it still happen if you press the button on the shifter to turn off overdrive?
Is this a 2.4L 4cyl or a 3.0L V6??
FWD or 4WD??
EDIT: Is this a 5 speed manual transmission (stick shift)???
Or a 2004 3.3L automatic??
