… might be even bigger (in some areas) than the historic Blizzard of 1947. I was born in the immediate aftermath of that blizzard, and my mother recalled that our doctor, who drove Mom & Dad to the hospital, drove very slowly, but that he went through every red light because he feared that he wouldn’t have enough traction to get his Chevy going again if he stopped. She said that they never saw another car on the road during their slow drive to the hospital.
Anyway, here is some archival footage of The Blizzard of 1947, in NYC. If you want to see a lot of cars from the '40s, they are on full display–under heaps of snow:
Been watching the news about it, the TV is about as close to that as I want to get, we have the cold here today 21° windchill 9° right now, but I can see the dirt on the ground… Send 6" our way NO ice though, still have clean up from that mess, but y’all can keep the other 18" + some of y’all will be getting…
Hope all y’all stay safe in it and more importantly stay warm!!!
… until it’s time to start the snowblower.
I’m praying that my Toro gas-powered snowblower will start, because the snow is far too deep for the battery-powered blower that I use for smaller snow accumulations. The “official” snow depth for my town is currently 16 inches, but I think that it may be stopping soon.
I have a medical appointment tomorrow, and I hope that I don’t have to cancel it.
Right now a weatherman on scene in NY (forgot what part), he was next to a small tree in waste high snow, didn’t see if that was a drift or how deep it was…
Our dr office would have called a day or two ago to get us to come in before the snow hit… Just happened during our ice storm, even my very hard to get in to neurologist (every 6 months) called me in a few days early… Y’all just wouldn’t go 4 months a year if that was your case… lol
Stay safe out there! It’s days like this that make me glad I put those new Michelin CrossClimates on last fall. I’m just staying put with a hot coffee until the plows finish their first pass.
My area is expected to get 8-12 inches. I already have 2’ piled in the front lawn. Then 1-3 more on Wednesday. This weekend temps are expected to ready 40. Then possibly another 9-10 inches on next Monday into Tuesday. In my area the storm is expected to wind down by around 6.
The Cape, RI and CT are really getting hit. NYC isn’t doing much better.
Our snow fall this morning was pretty, but the ground looks the same as it did a few days ago when it was mid 70’s…
Still hadn’t figured out where the snow goes when it is cold enough to stick, yet it just disappears 1/2" from the ground, it is like a portal to another world just sucks it all up…
Like it plays a game of now you see me now you don’t…
The good news is that the Toro started, and it ran like a champ… until the extremely wet snow froze in the discharge chute, and blocked any further discharge. No amount of digging/hacking with tools in that confined space did much to help, and I even resorted to using an old blow dryer, which only helped to a very small extent.
The other good news is that the bulk of my work was done before the ice jam formed, and I was able to finish the edges with the battery-powered machine. So, I should be able to get to my medical appointment tomorrow.
I’ve been watching the big event from Florida. Just happy it’s missed Minnesota though. Still had enough on the windshield to strip the wiper spines I think. I’ll investigate further but you have my sympathy. That’s a lot of snow.
There is no place left to put the snow. Plowing is futile, I have to use the snowblowers. Even though I always start the season pushing the banks well into the yard to keep room for more. And it’s high water content snow. 12" of fluffy stuff is no big deal. 12" of 2" water content is heavy and everything struggles to move it. Plow guys have all but given up with no place to put it.
My in-laws are in care facility but their house is still in the family. We hired a plow guy but he is a ■■■■■. He created 6’ tall plow banks up against the front entry and blocking the paths for the propane deliveries. Had to dig through those by hand. He also ignored the stakes and plowed 1/2 driveway and the rest lawn. Now sod is mixed in with the plow banks. What a mess! Took two hours of chiseling the banks and then blowing the ice/dirt/snow into the yard.
My own house is buried in 5 foot banks with towering piles from the plow and blower. Been about a decade since we had this much snow. And the hits just keep coming…
I still recall the Blizzard of 1996, in NJ. I was living in a condo community at the time, and that blizzard followed several previous snowstorms. In order to be able to clear my driveway, I had to hurl shovelfuls of snow onto the very narrow space between driveways.
When I was finished with clearing that blizzard’s accumulation, the piles were as high as my head, and I prayed that we wouldn’t have another storm because I wouldn’t have been able to hurl the snow any higher. Thankfully, my prayers were answered.
Yes, the roads are clear, and my driveway is sufficiently-cleared for me to be able to get out. The only possible glitch could be the doctor’s very small parking lot. I foresee only a few parking spaces, due to snow piles from the plows.
I got a text from them this morning, announcing that they are open. Yesterday, they sent an apologetic text about being closed. They’re pretty good with communication.
And they say the south is nicer… Heck we get a call saying we will be closed and need to reschedule due to the possibility that it might at some point within a 24 hour period start to flurry that could lead to snow at some point leading to some sort of light to moderate accumulation anywhere from 1" to 4", it is in ours and your best and safest interest that you come in early so that you have to sit and wait 3 times longer before going back… Have a great day and see you soon…
Seacoast NH.
We often get the brunt but the storm track makes a huge difference around here. A slight change east or west can mean a huge difference in where the jackpot appears. You already know that
Neighbor came by with his huge loader and pushed my end of driveway piles back. Amazing power. I stopped at a half dozen homes on the way to clear the in-laws. Older people struggling to shovel- I don’t know how guys can just drive by when it takes literally a minute to drop the plow and push the windrow for them under these exceptional conditions.
I’m at that point where shoveling the back walkway and deck, the snow falls back off the mound that’s higher than my head. Expecting 3" more inches today…
