I used Mr. Google to answer that question. 2014 was when the Corvette Stingray name was brought back after last used in 1976.
How about GM using the famed LS6 name for the 3rd time…

Gm may think afm results in fewer engine issues vs dfm. Might be true. I think gm wants trouble free motors. Might be true. Is gm striving for better fuel economy? Maybe. They seem to have reliability issues on truck motors.

To digress, I have always wanted a traditional Bucket T hot rod. Engine chooses for looks, not power or efficiency.
Chooses in order of desire:
49-53 Ford Flathead V8, Buick Nailhead, Chevy 348or 409.
My 2017 Vette is a Stingray. Stingray is the base model.
My 2017 Vette has the AFM system. From the corvette forum I belong to - everyone recommends to NOT use it. There have been numerous problems/engine failures. The system will automatically take effect when conditions are right if in ECO mode. I drive my vette in Touring mode almost exclusively.
Would be nice if gm made 2 vettes. Front motor and rear motor.
They compromised and put it in the middle. 
As long as it’s still V8 - it’s great. IMHO when the very last V8 gets off the assembly line, it will be the sign that the end of the world is near xD
