Tariffs and cars

Look at most any factory in a ‘how it’s made’ tv show: few humans involved, mostly to load and unload the automated machines that do the machining, welding, and painting, etc. I see no way to turn back that clock…

It’s amazing the number of people that fell for the lie that Trump was going to bring Coal jobs back. As long as Natural Gas prices are so (and expected to be low for decades because of the reserves), then coal jobs will NEVER come back. But it makes for a great sound bite for the uninformed.

Those “good paying manufacturing jobs” were never particularly good paying. They also were frequently dangerous and were very hard on the body. While it is true we can’t all make a living cutting someone else’s hair, the technology sector alone creates more jobs every year than manufacturing ever did. And if someone doesn’t have the intellect to be a knowledge worker, they can always get a job in an Amazon warehouse.

That seems to be one of the few areas of job growth for those who are unskilled.

We’ve all been mesmerized to salivate on cue from whichever ministry of Troooth suits our fancy and rant at those who are foolish enough to fall for the fake news from the opposition. And the talking heads from both sides of the aisle are just shallow carnival barkers who for a few dollars more would rush to join the opposition.

Lonesome Rhodes was such a grand glimpse into the future but reality is outdoing what seemed to be a grotesquely outrageous situation 60 years ago.

Smart people can work in an Amazon warehouse too. A friend of my daughter is in management at an Amazon warehouse. The pay must be good; her husband moves with her when she is transferred.

Is it that simple? No, it isn’t. The entire vehicle isn’t assembled in Mexico from parts made only in Mexico. Parts are made her e and sent to Mexico by Ford, GM, Audi or whatever company owns the assembly plants. Let’s say the engine andtransmisson are assembled in the US and then sent toMexico for assembly into the final vehicle. Maybe Mexico puts a tariff on the components from the US, and we can pay both tariffs when the car is sent back here for sale.

You are correct that the tariffs, if enacted, will start at 5%, then increase weekly until Mexico does “enough” to repeal or reduce the tariffs. What’s enough? No one knows. We don’t even know if President Trump is actually serious about the tariffs. He talks a lot and occasionally, he actually means it.

The tariff stand offs are terribly childish. Our president’s position is reminiscent of a 3rd grade little girl whose alpha position in her clique has led her to strut and assert the proclaimed superior position of herself and her clique to everyone on the play ground.

Maybe South Park will air a good program on that position. That program often hits the mark dead on.

Oh sure they were. Especially in the auto industry. I had relatives with college degrees making more assembling cars then they could in their chosen fields. When I graduated college the starting salary at New Process Gear was about $15/hr. Minimum wage was $2/hr. Teacher salary was $20k/yr (about $10/hr).

Oh trust me…one side is far more truthful then the other. Several magnitudes more truthful.

But that would still be more job openings, than we have now.

We have two very rigid opinions going on here with each spewing their own proof of their positions. I dunno, I feel like I wasted 15 minutes that I’ll never get back but compared to cleaning up the shop . . .? I worked factory jobs in the summer and even at entry level general labor, I could make enough with overtime to pay for a year of private college. When I actually got my first professional job, I actually took a pay cut. So yeah, they did generally pay pretty well.

“So what does he have, a magic wand?” No, just maybe some common business sense with putting American workers first. Seems to be working but you have to remember that part of the whole game is putting pressure where you can put pressure with sometimes a goal (like reducing theft of corporate secrets) not fully appreciated by the followers of the uni-party. There was a period when companies were actually encouraged to ship jobs out of the country through policy and tax structure. Think that’s going to change in a couple years? Especially with continual daily resistance that I have never ever seen since I first started watching politics in the 60’s. Hang on and enjoy the ride and see what happens.

You are correct in saying that I am correct in saying tariffs would start at 5% if enacted.

However, you incorrectly said that I stated/implied that they’d rise weekly. I did not.

You are wrong in saying they’d rise weekly, although I have seen/read some liberal fake news folks report that. Be careful where you get your information.

Please! Don’t help spread the “misinformation”. The tariffs would rise 5% monthly up to 25%.

Thank you

Oh, that’s MUCH better!

So the 25% in the ‘fake’ news report was correct, after all…

You don’t pay much attention to the news. He’s NOT in any way shape or form concerned about putting American workers first. If that were the case his companies wouldn’t have hired (and caught and fined) illegals. Or hiring more foreign workers then American workers at his businesses, or outsourcing the trinkets he and the rest of his family sells out to countries like Vietnam or China. He’s proven time and time again he’s not for American workers. Geez - pay attention.

He’s for one thing and one thing only…himself…everyone else can be damned.

If we just watch…we’ll be screwed.

Would this be the same workers he stiffed on his failed casinos or the ones effected by his 4 bankruptcies .

… you forgot to include the small suppliers who had the misfortune to do business with his casinos. Almost all of them were “stiffed” when it came to being paid, and some of them went out of business. The one that was most memorable was an elderly man who “sold” several pianos to the tRump casinos. He was never paid, and his business failed because he couldn’t absorb the cost of about 10 pianos that he wound up giving–albeit involuntarily–to the tRump casinos.

Some additional food for thought…

It’s not too difficult to recognize that nearly half of America fails to read and comprehend at the 8th grade level and those are the people who are least represented by government and left to slip between the cracks in every aspect of life and that situation has little chance of improving any time soon. Those borderline illiterates are so easily targeted by right wing media with regional and cultural right wing hot button issues and indoctrinated into believing the progressive left has become followers of the anti-christ. And when you consider who owns CBN it’s easy to recognize how substantial the effort is to denigrate the left.

And re voting third party, neither party has the cajones or cash to stand up against the deep pockets of the money changers in New York and I choose to vote for the candidate regardless of party who appears most determined and most likely to buck the system to “drain the swamp” but my most recent choice at that objective appears to be my worst miscalculation so far. I voted against Hillary and look what I got for it.

Oh I’ve been paying great attention since January, 2012. News? Which news? It is extremely hard to find any real news but I have been building a pretty good sized library but there are a couple that I haven’t bothered with including “What Happened?” and that other one by Moochelle laying on the foot stool. If you listen to the news, you are hardly informed. You have to look at where the funding is coming from and who is being paid off.
