Sudden Engine Shutdown - Pontiac GP

I have a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, supercharged 3.8L engine. I have been having problems with sudden shutdown of the engine (electrically) about 10-15 minutes into my commute. It will restart after a short while and run fine after that. I have a “Low Coolant” warning light on all the time due, I’m guessing, to a faulty sensor as the coolant level is fine. Could this cause the engine shutdown as the engine temp comes up? Pontiac dealer says no, but sounds possible to me.

No. The coolant level sensor won’t cause the engine to shut down. The more likely problem is something in the electronic ignition system. Such as a heat sensitive ignition module or crankshaft position sensor.

The low coolant indicator is just a sensor in the radiator that grounds through the coolant to keep the light off. If the coolant goes down, or the sensor gets dirty etc., no ground and the light goes on. No relationship to the stalling problem. On one car I actually had to run a ground wire with a clip to ground the thing out to keep the light off.

check the batt terminals for corrosion, normal on Garbage Motors cars, and weird stuff happens, then go from there.

you wont be able to see it by eye, pull the terminals off,and i bet you get a HUGE surprise.
