I have a 1999 Jetta Volkswagen and is a manual…When the car is moving forward at lower speeds its making a rattling noise that kind of sounds like nails being scratched on a chalk board…It only does it sometimes but it just started today…I need some help!
I’m trying to imagine something that sounds like both a rattle and a screech and am having a hard time with it.
Does the noise stop when you put on the brakes? If so, call it a screech and go get new brake pads (the screech being from the warning tabs on the pads).
If its more like a rattle start with a visual inspection of heat shields on the exhaust system, and also of the front end. Look for a loose heat shield, or a loose piece of something around the wheels - inboard & outboard.
