Strange engine noise

Hey guys,

I own a '96 Monte Carlo Z34 with a 3.4 litre.Recently it has started making a noise similar to a power steering pump low on fluid. But the noise is coming from the driver side of the motor. I can hear it while the car idles, but it is more evident when the engine is cold, or when the transmission shifts. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Could the noise be comming from the transmission? Have you checked the fluid level?
