What you mention is usually a squealing belt driving the power steering pump.
Have a mechanic check this out because if it breaks you will lose your steering as well as the drive for the water pump and alternator.
The clock spring behind the steering wheel for the air bag/steering wheel controls can start squeaking when the steering wheel is turned.
