could someone help me please… the speedometer on my 1998 ford escort wagon just stops working periodically when i am driving down the road. then it will come back on again… sometime it does it numerous times in my 40 min ride to work.
Your Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) might be faulty. The VSS attaches to the transmission and feeds a signal to the speedometer. A mechanic can check it and replace it if necessary.
my father is a mechanic by hobby is this something he should be able to do or do you need a special tool to test or replace it?

Replacing it should be simple. Testing it will require a multi-meter, and a service manual for the specs. Check your local book store or auto parts store for a Haynes manual, or try Books4Cars.com.
