Speed Cameras are being installed in school zones

I recalled him telling me I needed to do nothing else except to take the judge warning seriously. But I forgot to ask him about the school. I will do for sure tomorrow.

Nevada appears to be knowledgeable on this subject, so I felt I might ask him.

No big deal

You really are Clueless ! It would not mean a thing what Nevada or anyone else on an anonymous Forum says . I could tell you to just ignore the letter than you might hear from the schools attorney for even more money.

I won’t be paying or spending or reducing anything. My son was the one driving 29mph in a school zone so this is his problem.

However, he is an industrious high schooler with a part-time job and from a young age has always been quite mindful of managing his money. I can’t imagine that the fine would significantly affect his spending or budgeting. It’s no more than a baseball bat or catcher’s mitt.

As a side note, in this day and age in automotive terms, $243 is not a lot of money. If you don’t have resources to cover the cost of a blown tire, broken serpentine belt, failed battery, or speeding ticket, car ownership may not be for you.

He did say he was going to drive by that spot and see how he missed the school zone sign. But the fact remains the car is on camera speeding. I don’t see how you could challenge that, maybe one could attend a hearing and plead for lenience?

Loud thunder, I would love for you to read the comments on this article. Reddit - Dive into anything

You will understand why I’m not in favor of stricter laws.

Here in Virginia, you can request a jury trial for a traffic infraction if you appeal the case to circuit court. However, in general district court, traffic cases are heard by a judge without a jury.

In most states, you don’t have the right to a jury trial for minor traffic offenses like speeding, running a red light, or distracted driving. Even though these offenses are technically considered crimes, they are usually not handled in criminal courtrooms.

So, in most case you can request a trial and hope the police officer who wrote the ticket does not appear, or the judge takes pity on you if the ticket is based on photographic evidence.

Again, here in Virginia, you can challenge a speed camera photo by contesting the ticket within the specified time frame after receiving it.

*** You can file an affidavit with the clerk of the general district court by mail. You must file a notarized statement that you were not driving the vehicle at the time of the alleged violation and provide the name and address of the person who was.

*** Or you can testify in open court under oath that you were not driving the vehicle at the time of the alleged violation and provide the name and address of the person who was.

That is how it is handled where I live, you should find out how it is handled in your municipality, city, county, or state… And you do that by calling the “traffic court” or the “clerk of the court” as listed on your ticket.

Now, as to the cost of an initial consultation with a lawyer, those are usually free since the lawyer is only explaining your options and the cost associated with their involvement. Now if you want legal advice on how to handle the situation, well, their time is money and that will cost you.

I did read the Reddit Blog listing you provided the link to, but I do not see how it has any bearing on your situation. Do you live where all these posters live, did you get your ticket under the same situations, do you have the same excuses these posters did.

Probably not much of anything applies to your situation…

You do realize that “REDDIT” a social news blog where anybody can post Anything from Anywhere and the Users can all chime in with their opinions and then they vote on it… Whatever that means…

I would think that REDDIT is a great place for “Mob Mentality” to rule…

Now, here is an example that not even the local courts in my county can agree on… In the Google Map below, is my neighborhood, Intersection “A” is the next street down from Intersection “B.” I have edited the map only to remove some of the homes between the two intersections…

Here in Virginia, drivers approaching from any direction, whether on a two-lane road, multi-lane highway or divided highway. The only exception is when there is a physical barrier dividing the highway, and the bus is on the opposite side of the barrier.

As you can see, there main road through my subdivision and there is a grassed area with trees planted in the and the question is: "is it a Physical Barrier. We have two School Busses that pick up the kids, the road generally goes east and west and one bus travels east picking up the kids that live on the south side and there is a bus that travels west picking up the kids that live on the north side.

Kids are not expected to walk across the grass to catch a bus going the other way, but they do to be with their friends…

However, the Stopped School Bus (Yellow Rectangle) law comes into play. In situation “A”, if I am driving in the Red Vehicle, I am not required to stop for the school bus.

But, in situation “B”, drivers have been ticketed for passing a stopped school bus and have had to pay fines accordingly; however, some ticketed drivers have been found Not Guilty since the “Physical Barrier” definition is a bit wishy-washy.

Me, I stop for several reasons. As I mentioned, there are kids on both sides of the road and if the bus has not yet picked up the south side kids, they just might decide to run across the road to catch the other bus… And I also stop because I do not want to spend countless hours fighting this in court…

And for the last reason, I do not want to hit a child!

In your illustration, except for the houses the A & B diagrams look the same. What I am I missing?

This isn’t about my situation specifically but rather about laws becoming stricter. And as given a glimpse of people’s experiences with school bus law, the system is being used to scam us. The more we allow the government to enact laws, the more we are at the mercy of the government.

There are absolutely no good reasons for traffic on the other side of a divided highway to stop for a school bus, and here in NY, there are no exceptions such a barrier or whatnot.

3 weeks ago, I saw a state trooper sitting in the middle of the center lane of a 6 lane road patrolling traffic and decided to pull up alongside him. When I got to his window, I signaled to him to scroll his window down and then informed him I was deaf and needed to ask him a question.

“ Good afternoon, officer, I said to him as he looked at me suspiciously. “ I just need some clarification here. I understand we are to stop for the school bus on both sides of the road. “. Before I was finished talking, the officer interrupted and said boldly “ That is correct, both sides!” I then continued on “ But what doesn’t seem clear to me is that this law wants me to stop for the school bus on a divided highway. Care to explain this to me?” The officer looked at me as if he thought I was an idiot and said “ School busses do not stop on highways!” I then said “ I’m going by the book here. It says even on divided highways we are to stop. So can you explain this ?” He then looked confused trying to come up with an answer before he said “ What the law is saying is traffic must stop for school buses on both sides of the road; look, I’m busy, and this is not the right time to discuss this. Have a great day !”

So from this interaction with the officer, i see very clear that even the state trooper finds the law ridiculous that he couldn’t defend it.

Those are your examples? 2 of the most idiotic sites out there. Where the questions are like these:

Yeah, that’s a site I’d rely on. :joy:  :joy:

It’s not your disability, it’s your inability to process information satisfactorily and quickly enough to respond to situations in a timely manner. You said in a later post that school buses pop up out of nowhere. They are huge. They are bright yellow. I find it hard to believe that anyone can miss them.

Yes, you have. You don’t see things like big yellow school buses. You have trouble processing information on the road in a timely manner. Take the AARP class listed above. You don’t have to be a senior citizen to take their defensive driving class.

The trooper found you to be a pest and your stopping beside him could have caused a traffic incident. Plus you also blocked his view which probably made him a little nervous.

Go back to Reddit and Quora where you will fit right in and leave the adults alone.

Depending on which street I’m on, yes — don’t see the big yellow bus until you I make a left turn into its direction.

Sometimes I wonder what roads do you guys drive on as to why you don’t understand this on this platform. I’m in a village and a very busy city-ish.

Also, reddit and Quora are both used by high professionals, including lawyers, actors, doctors, etc. I know this to be true because their names are signed and documented, and occasionally their answers and questions get featured on the news.

The thread is about cameras being installed at school zone, right ? And OP has said he can’t wait for the school buses in his states to install cameras as well.

I’m going to assume that OP welcomes all opinions from all angles and not just opinions that align with his.

My response to his post was an opposition and I think when it comes to a public forum we are allowed that.

To get upset or annoyed and offensive as to suggest to leave the forum to join elsewhere doesn’t seem like what an adult would do.

That is nothing but laughable!! Quora and Reddit are about the last dregs of websites. Their posters and respondents have to be the least reliable people I’ve ever encountered.

Are you doing a left turn at 90mph? Every other motorist on the road doesn’t have a problem seeing those big yellow buses. It sounds like you should give up your license.

All you need to do is go on Reddit or Quora to see thousands of people missing the big bright yellow bus.

And unfortunately, my neighbor got a school bus ticket a few days ago and when he looked at the video, he was astounded that he missed the big bright yellow bus.

He too should give up his license to join you as a license-less man.

If you can’t see a BIG YELLOW BUS then how the hell can you possibly see a little 8yo wearing gray cloths on a rainy day? You’re either too blind or you don’t pay enough attention when you’re driving. Turn in you license.

This topic is old and tiring. However, if you had a driver’s license, which I think you didn’t, then you’d know all the possibilities that may cause you to miss the big, bright and yellow bus.

Pretend you are in the city and positioned in the far left lane at an intersection making a left turn onto a street where a stopped school bus is at the far left lane and there are traffic in the middle and right lane. As you go through the intersection, a car to your right approached towards you. Your eyes now are focused on the car to ensure it doesn’t run into you, then next to the car a pedestrian walked out slightly into the road and your eyes are watching him while you simultaneously watched the car in front of you. As you watched to make sure all is well, you drove pass the darn school bus that is stopped in the far left lane on the other side of the street.

Btw. I’m done discussing this. Get a license if you can and go for a ride. You’ll understand better from experience.

EDIT. I renewed my license this month at the DMV and they asked me to read the first line on the chart which is 20/40 and I asked if I could read the bottom lines instead to see how well my vision is. The bottom lines are 20/20.

I’ve had a license for over 50 years. Spotless driving record for over 30 years. And I’ve driven well over 1 million miles. And in your scenario I would NEVER have missed the school bus. I’ve driven in very heavy traffic in very busy cities thousands of times. I use to work in Boston. Went to college in Syracuse. No one i know who’s paying attention to their driving would ever miss seeing a school bus…EVER. As I said - you obviously don’t have the skills to drive safely. You are a hazard to everyone else on the road. Turn in your license.
