Have you checked the oil? When was the oil last changed? A complete lack of oil will cause this kind of noise. It is basically the engine’s death cry. I sincerely hope this is not the case. The 3.0 Mitsu motor they put in those vans would make all kinds of noise when they got over 60,000 miles, but they stopped using that engine in either 2000 or 2001.
