My 1987 Dodge Dakota pickup has loose steering. The steering wheel can move from the 10 oclock to 2 oclock position without turning the truck while in drive. The steering wheel also seems to float in my hands while traveling down the road. It feels sloppy. Is this dangerous?
Loose or sloppy steering is never safe, and it sounds like you have a particularly bad case. Have your front end checked out ASAP and have any necessary work done regarding tie rod ends, ball joints, etc. Also look into having your steering gear tightened up. The procedure for your truck is pretty easy, as long as you can find a mechanic with enough gray hair to know how to do something like this. Get it fixed; it’s not safe to drive with that much play in the steering.
