1998 GMC Jimmy the shifter can be moved between reverse, neutral, and drive without pressing the button on the side of the shifter, doesn’t lock into place properly. Can do the same between 3, 2, and 1. Locks into park, must press button to move out of park, or to move from reverse to park, drive to 3, or 3 to drive. Possible causes and fixes? Thanks.
It DOES shift into gear, so it can be driven, just the shifter button does not have to be pressed when moving between gears.
The internal latch for the shifter is broken. Take the shifter apart, you should be able to figure out which part is broken. the bigger problem will be finding a replacement for the 21 year old truck. Check with GM first but you may be searching junkyards to find the part. Or make a replacement if you have a machinist friend.
