I had a engineer colleague from Scotland. He said that no matter where he was in the world he could always get a wee bit of whisky from home. Trip back not required.
Yeah, that friend of @MikeInNH must have VERY particular tastes, dozens of great Scotch whiskies available here.
edit - make that over 200 different Scotch whiskies over $30 a bottle at the neighborhood liquor store (54 over $100).
That is true, but when I was in Italy, the price of Scotch whiskey was so high that I only ordered it once. I think that govāt policy in that country and in France is to set the tariffs on imported whisky very high in order to encourage people to drink the local wine, rather than distilled spirits.
