Safe to tow a 3,200 lb camper with my truck?

I have a 2014 Ford F-150 XLT with a 3.7 V6, 6 speed auto transmission supercab 2WD. It only has 36k miles and drives awesome. My question is it safe to tow a 21 foot travel trailer? It is weighing at 3,200 lbs dry. It’s a single axle camper. I have researched and found that my truck is rated to tow up to 6,400 lbs. So am I pushing it with the camper I am interested in? The truck has a towing package with trailer brake controller as well as full hitch package. I’ve never owned a camper before so I wanted to see if I could get any advice from y’all before making a purchase. Thanks.

The truck should be up to it. It’s well rated and it sounds like it has the proper equipment. But will the driver be? Making a turn with a trailer requires carving a different arc. Stopping requires having left more room, even with the trailer brakes. Lane changes need forethought, and any car you’re pulling in front of needs more room behind you than without a trailer.

Is it “rocket science”? Absolutely not. But you might want to get some literature on trailer towing before starting out.

I’ve towed an open trailer up to 15 feet so I do have some experience. I’ll not drive like I stole it with a trailer. But it makes me feel a bit better knowing I’m not pushing my truck too hard.

Make sure you have enough tongue weight on the hitch. Rookies often make the mistake of loading the heavy thing in the back of the trailer. That causes the trailer to sway excessively from side to side.

That’s good to hear.
The truck will be fine. Have a great trip.

I imagine flat towing in nebraska would be ok. going up to the higher elevations might be a bit of work. its the non-turbo motor? not a lot of torque i believe? 3200 lbs empty and loaded is how much more? 3-4 passengers. gear. stuff?

Thanks y’all for the advice. I’ve decided not to go forth with purchasing a camper. Just not the right time for me.
