OK then. I just priced these axels on RockAuto and was pleasantly surprised - 60.00 each. I was expecting 200.00 or more. Sounds like it’s time to get the jack out!

Good for you. Suggest to get your tape measure out & double check the new axle’s are exactly the same dimensions as the old ones before installing Often the axle part number is different depending on the car’s configuration and options, and the auto parts store staff may not have the expertise to know what to ask. Compare the number of splines on each end too.

What George left out about using a tape measure is, the inner joints will compress and expand due to suspension travel, so just measuring the axle lengths without compressing them fully will not do you much good, basically hold both axles vertically while compressing them (pushing down) on the floor, you can pretty well eyeball them for the correct length… You can quickly slide the outer cv joint splines into the hub bearing just a little to make sure they fit, no counting of splines necessary, do a quick inspection of the inner splines on the end for damage and snap ring compared to the old one, eyeballing normally good enough, and slide it in very carefully making sure not to damage the transmission axle seal or you will be getting to do it again but with replacing the axle seal or this time paying a pro to do the work…

Makes sure the female splines in the hub bearing are not heavily rusted or you might have an issue seating the joint in the hub when torquing to spec and the nut backing off or the bearing separating… And if supplied with a new axle nut, use it…

EDIT, looks like the right axle has female inner splines, so it slides over the male axle stub in the transmission (transaxle), less likely to have inner spline damage…

Also make sure both have the abs rings on them…

If you’re short of money and time, you do what you have to do.

Make sure to fully read the procedure in the manual first so you know what you are getting into. That axle bolt, at least on Gm, is a bear to get off and torqued again. Also careful not to pull the axle apart putting it on. I did that once pulling the inner joint apart and had to go buy another one.
