Ah! Seems like there’s been a misunderstanding (at least on my end). :wink:
When you said “fix the coolant system” and “leak”, I thought you meant engine coolant system, and a leak in that. That system is separate from the A/C system, which uses a refrigerant to cool the air for the cabin, but does NOT cool the engine.

Because it seems your $1000 estimate is just for the A/C system (to get it working), I ask whether you can live without A/C, and if not, how much it is worth to you to have it working.

And I don’t know current prices for that A/C work, but my gut says $1000 is high for places other than dealers.

The coolant leak and overheating should be the first thing you fix. Provided that issue isn’t something major, I would think the car would be worth more than $400 unless it’s in really poor condition.
