does anyone know of a product that you can buy that is a remote microphone, where you can mount the mic somewhere on/in the car, and listen to it on a remote speaker in order to help you better localize a sound? or hear the sound more clearly while driving?

I am a little confused. Could you be a little more specific about what you want?

I’m assuming you’re trying to balance the speakers in your vehicle’s sound system.

Check http://www.crutchfield.com

They might have what you’re looking for, but I think it’s a bit more complex than just a microphone.

Then again, my assumption may be wrong. Your initial post is rather vague.

Do you mean something like this? http://www.miracle-ear.com/

I’m guessing you’re planning to use it to diagnose some noise the car makes while you’re driving?

Try something like this:

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=s&hl=en&q=wireless+microphone&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=13860525101531369209&ei=tHJETPDROsGjnAel0uW8Cw&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=image&resnum=2&ved=0CEYQ8gIwAQ#

You’ll want to secure the microphone in place with tape. You might want to cut up an old sock and wrap a piece of it around the microphone as a windscreen, otherwise you’ll just get wind noise if it’s mounted anywhere outside the cabin.

If your car has a tape player, you can also pick up a $12 adapter so you can hear it on your stereo instead of through the crappy little earpiece it comes with.
