I have a 2000 VW New Beetle. The cloth on the driver’s seat was getting really worn so my Dad had the cloth replaced on the front center of the seat and over the left side of the chair where the air bag would deploy if there was an accident. I want to know if this is a safety risk. What would happen if the air bag was to go off what would happen to the chair/passenger? I am hoping to get rid of this car soon but I will get rid of it sooner if it is not safe.

If the air bag was covered, you’ll have to cut an opening for it to clear should a collision occur.
Messing around with air bags is asking for trouble.
What would be the safest way to cut an opening and how will I know that it is cleared? Any ideas? Thanks!
I would take it to a body/upholstery shop, see what they say. You don’t want to do it wrong, have it hurt you or someone else.
