Evervrode a bicycle in the winter with skinny tires? That’s why the fat tired bikes are used in the winter. Model ts were light and high. Even if they could take the weight, don’t think you’d model t tires on an suv fir winter.
I have watched that video before, always amazed the car made it through that mud.
Model T’s didn’t have tires. They had wagon wheels with a bit of rubber on them.
/sarcasm
The Model T’s engine only produced a maximum of 80 ft lbs of torque. Couldn’t that help to explain how it managed to get through mud with those narrow tires?
And the earliest Model Ts had NO tread on those tires! They were white and smooooth.
Firestone introduced their treaded tires in 1908. Carbon black was added to rubber about 1910 or so to improve durability.
On to 500 posts!
I do not remember the brand, but the tread pattern was “NOSKID”.
It was actually “NON SKID”.
It’s a good thing for Firestone that there were no Truth in Advertising regulations back in the so-called “Good Old Days”.
Hey, even the tread pattern reads NONSKID. It must be true!
Just what we call puffing. Salespeople use it all the time. Everyone has their own definition of what that would mean. Remember the Armstrong TV commercials for tires that grip the roads? Especially ignore ads from the drug companies except when the fine print says severe side effects like death.
The drug commercials I see on TV state significant side effects. The caveats are typically “ if you experience these side effects, stop taking the drug and contact your doctor immediately”.
Along with “do not take if you are allergic to Valcrudia or any of its ingredients” So how would anyone know before taking it?
That’s why your doctor provides the prescription. They check your health risks against the known side effects of the proposed medicine.
But my Doc nor I do not know everything I might be allergic to… The disclaimer makes no sense; it is legal coverage.
I generally laugh at the adverts if you listen to the “might cause” comments… sudden death, blindness, liver damage, vomiting or anal leakage (!?!). With that list, WHY would anybody even want to try the drug to cure a chronic something I can live with?
I don’t think drugs should be advertised on TV. Cars or tires, I think, should be advertised on TV.
Gotta get the car related plugs in! On to 500!
It was a joke folks. Just saying I don’t believe any ads is all.
Now I was thinking of my drivers training instructor as I crossed the same tracks that he warned would kill me if I didn’t look both ways. Still hasn’t been a train there in years. At any rate we had a 64 ford and it was a great car to drive. Never been my favorite body style but a great car. Only once did he have to use that emergency brake pedal he had when the girl was driving. Don’t remember what she did but he got pretty red. Former fighter pilot so you’d think danger didn’t bother him.
Thank you, yes NONSKID, just working on a 50 year old memory.
What is interesting is that the term “Non-Skid depth” is still used within the tire industry
On to 500!
Let’s add farm tractor tires. I know which direction they go, but my brain still says they look backward.
I love it when they say - “Don’t use it if you’re allergic to the drug or any of its ingredients.” Gee? Really? I never would have thought of that.
There’s so much FREE information on the internet on drugs and interactions. Even your pharmacy will have all that information for FREE.
Actually two bike shops advised me to go skinny tires when I told them I’d be commuting in the winter by bike in Chicago. On streets or paved trails I might add. I refused to believe the first guy but when the second guy said the same I took him up on the offer.
Turns out they were right. I had no problem in snow on streets or paved trails. The tires cut right through to the pavement. But both dealers said only paved. Snow on dirt or muddy trails would need the fat knobby tires.
And hey I’m .500. Do I get the booby prize.
