Yes, the 4.9 had a plastic(?) cam gear. It actually looked like baked oat meal. And the failures were rare but when it failed the engine didn’t start at all. And it seemed to me that they failed on out of tune engines that tried to diesel counter clockwise when shut down. If I’m correct the fuel injected models wouldn’t be likely to strip the gear.

OP, I think you mentioned above there’s no check engine light. But there could still be diagnostic codes stored in the computer memory, possibly as pending codes. If you haven’t read those out yet, suggest to ask your shop to take a look.
