Poor acceleration on 99 Oldsmobile

Trying to accelerate Eng cuts out and check Eng light flashes. Gas cap is tight, oxygen sensor been replaced to no avail. Fuel filter has been replaced and on 3rd visit to shop? Any suggestions welcome!

A steadily illuminated CEL means that you can take the car to a mechanic when it is convenient.
However, a flashing CEL means DO NOT CONTINUE TO DRIVE THE CAR unless you want to risk expensive damage to components like the catalytic converter.

There should be stored trouble codes, but apparently your mechanic does not know how to properly interpret them. You need to get this car to a different mechanic (not Midas, Meineke, Monro, Sears, AAMCO, Lee Myles, or any other chain operation) a.s.a.p. in order to avoid making this problem more expensive to remedy than it already is.

does it idle ok.will it die if you give it gas while its in park or only if its in gear and driving? put fuel pressure gauge on it and see what it reads. seen crankshaft position sensor do this as well. does it start right back up?any codes stored in the computer?

That CEL (check engine light) is just a kid in class waving her hand trying to get you attention because she has the answer. You need to have the codes read. Some places will read them for FREE. Try Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts. Get the exact code (like P0123) not just their translation into English and post it back here.

Regarding warning lights:

  1. if the coolant temp light comes on, shut off the engine ASAP
  2. if the oil warning light comes on, shut off the engine ASAP
  3. if a FLASHING MIL/CEL comes on, shut off the engine ASAP

You obviously have a misfire under load. You need to find a competent mechanic to take the car to in order to have the codes pulled and interpreted correctly. These symptoms are usually very easy for a competent mechanic to diagnose. A loose gas cap or out of range oxygen sensor will cause a steady CEL and usually not cause driveability problems. A fuel filter is a preventive maintenance item which should be replaced regularly and is unlikely to cause the symptoms you describe.
