Noise in tires

I have a 2005 Ford Taurus with 40 K miles. I keep it in good shape. Lately, I hear a chugging or turning sound as the vehicle gains momentum, and continues all along. What and why is this sound?

Is it a pulsating wahwahwahwah type sound that you can hear especially around 20-40 mph?? That’s usually the beginning of ply separation in a tire…As it get worse, you will be able to SEE the distortion in the tire tread.

Sometimes tires wear unevenly, especially on the edges. This uneven wear, “cupping”, will also make a rhythmic sound…

It could be irregular wear, which is caused by misalignment and aggravated by insufficient roation practices and insufficient inflation pressure.

Besides at 40K, it’s probably time to replace your tires anyway. Go see a tire dealer.
