My wife’s 99 ford escort sw, 4 cyl, AT will not start. Mechanic checked coil said it was good. Has an aftermarket remote start, also supposedly not the issue. Engine turns over but doesn’t catch fuel pump kicks on but no actual ignition. Vehicle was working fine and just died along the road at about 55 mph. Any suggestions appreciated, methods of total destruction included.

You say the coil was checked. Does that mean that there is spark (confirmed at spark plug?) The fuel pump kicks on but is there actually fuel? Try blowing some starting fluid into the intake.
What exactly has the mechanic done to try to get it to run other than checking the coil?
Have the compression checked.
Has anyone checked the timing belt?
