The Brown and MIT professor shooter was found dead (self-inflicted) in a storage facility. I was at the Lowes store about 1/4 mile away at the time the police were swarming the facility. I had no idea it was happening until I was driving home and my wife called me and told me. Luckily when I left Lowes I went in the opposite direction. My town is East of Salem. I’ve mentioned this intersection in Salem before - It has 3 auto parts stores (AutoZone, Advance Auto and PepBoys - although this PepBoys no longer sells parts. They just do auto repairs now).

During a news conference Thursday, authorities identified the suspect as Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a 48-year-old former Brown graduate student, who attended the school some 25 years ago.
The way that was phrased had me believe he was a faculty.
The guy went to Brown University and shot up a classroom killing 2 and injuring 9 others (some critically). He then drove to Brookline MA and shot an MIT professor. Then he ended up at a Storage facility in Salem NH where he killed himself.

The Pep Boys near me just changed their signage to show an Advance Auto Parts store attached to the repair shop. There’s another Advance store closer to me and about 4.4 miles away the Pep Boys near that seemed too close to me, but they’ve coexisted for a few years now.

Now that we are talking about auto stores, hear my story. Blower motor resistor failed on my truck just out of warranty. Went to AutoZone, got their white box replacement, it’s been working fine for ten years.
Since Lowe’s was mentioned. Went to Lowe’s to shop lawnmowers, saw the one I wanted. Sign in store states order on line, 48 hour delivery assembly included. Fine, I ordered, took nearly three weeks, not assembled, battery dead. This is an isolated case. In general I like Lowes.
When I was at Lowes I walked by the Lawnmowers. Over 50% of them are now electric.
The confusion of whether Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, the former Brown graduate student was a student or faculity lies in his past position as a Graduate Student.
Graduate Students at universities often teach, typically as Teaching Assistants (TAs) or Graduate Student Instructors, filling roles from leading discussion sections, to grading, and even holding office hours to sometimes being the instructor of record for entire lower-level courses. And he may have performed all of these functions…
If they didn’t have that specific one I wanted physically in the store, I wouldn’t have given them the time of day, let alone my money for something I have to order on line even though I’m in the store!
They had it, did not want to drive 10 miles home to get the trailer. Since delivery from free, I ordered it.
Yeah I watched the progress of this. Every day another story. Frustrating. Sounds like a homeless student or former connected the dots and reported the rental car. Plate readers I’m sure tracked it. Lots we don’t know and maybe won’t.
