My car is making a rattling noise when idle and when I start it. It goes away when I’m driving though. Here’s how it sounds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lV_ekxbGwU
That’s a loose heat shield somewhere along the exhaust system.
To fix you get under there, tap and poke to find the loose piece.
Then use a sheet metal screw or even a piece of wire or coat hanger to hold it in place.
With a little improvisation this will cost no more than a little time.
I advise against removing any heat shields. They put them there for a reason.
Thank you so much!

+1
However, I think it is important to note that circuitsmith’s advice should only be acted-upon when the exhaust system is stone cold.
How much do you think a shop would charge?
Had a broken clamp, making a rattling noise like that, my regular guys said no charge, bender shop welded a split cat for $10, along with exhaust system, My guess $50 max and probably less at an independent shop if it is exhaust related simple fix.
Sounds exactly like my travel alarm!
Most shops today charge a minimum one hour diagnostic charge. Often with a loose exhaust part that only needs a clamp, they’ll only charge for the labor, sometimes only a nominal fee.
Thanks for the video, however. I wish more posters would take the few minutes to give us real detail. It really helps.
Thank you for taking the time out to respond!
Do you still have the rattle or is it fixed ?
Update! It was the catalytic converter! I got it fixed on Saturday.
