I did call a few independents, who each said something along the lines of “we’ve never done that before, but we’ll give it a shot!”
Um, no. (Especially since, in this case, it was a computer failure… The part itself was $1400, and an independent wasn’t going to be able to grab one for cheap from a scrapyard.)
I’ve talked to lots of Prius owners who have had the same experience… Almost all go to the dealer for anything besides tires and body work. Until more independents have Prius-specific diagnostic equipment and more experience with hybrids (there is a certification available to independents, but very few have it), I’ll pay more for people who know what they’re doing.
