At least US consumers got the “better”
version of the Rover 800 series. In the UK, consumers could buy one with the standard Rover I-4 engine, and that engine was a disaster, with blown head gaskets being very common.
What they all had in common was the disastrous Lucas electrical system and very bad build quality. Buyers frequently experienced lots of noise from poorly-designed/installed interior components and failed power windows w/in the first two years, plus hot weather caused the padding on the dashboard to curl-up at the ends.
