I have a 2008 Honda Civic with about 50K on it. I’m hearing a sporadic metallic noise from front left wheel. Noise goes away when braking. Any idea what it might be?
Thanks,
Justin

Your front brakes may be due for replacement. There are “scrapers” built into the pads that contact the rotor to alert that the pads are getting thin.
I think RodKnox is right - your brakes likely will need replacing.
If you have 50K on a 2008 Honda front brakes, you are doing quite well. 08 and 09s Honda Accords have relatively small brake pads for the front that have a tendency to wear out quickly. 50K on most brakes but especially those types of brakes is really good. They’ve since changed the design.
Agree with the above. You need routine brake service on the front wheels, and likely on all four wheels. You need not go to a Honda dealership. Check the newspapers for coupons or special deals.
I thought worn brake pads resulted in noise when braking. Mine are making noise when I’m not braking, then silent when I brake.
By the way, I replaced front pads at around 30 or 35K. Guess I have a heavy brake foot.
“I thought worn brake pads resulted in noise when braking. Mine are making noise when I’m not braking, then silent when I brake.”
At this point, the thin wires embedded in the brake pads as an auditory warning device will make a noise when you are not braking–so that you know that the pads need to be replaced soon.
However, if you ignore this warning, you will instead begin to hear louder noises when you apply the brake. At that point, you will be hearing the destruction of the brake rotors from metal-to-metal contact. If you replace the brake pads now, you may be able to avoid having to replace the rotors.
Got it. Thanks everyone for your help
