I have a 1998 Mazda 626 with an auto trans that is acting up. I got it from my uncle who already knew about this problem. When reversing, sometimes both reverse and neutral will respond to throttle input. I’ve reversed uphill in neutral because of that. But other times reverse and neutral do what they’re supposed to do. Drive is sometimes 3 things. It’s either Drive like it’s supposed to be, drive but it revs to high and won’t change gears, or neutral. The trans has the 2 low gears and sometimes 2nd gear is drive, but 1st is always 1st no matter what. So what’s my problem and how do I fix it? I would love to get it fixed as soon as possible.
The problem might be with the park/neutral safety/transmission range switch.

This switch informs the computer what gear is selected. The computer then operates solenoids within the transmission to engage the gears.
This switch is located under the shift lever on the transmission.
