Loose tire rolls? and hits vehicle, killing driver

“Based on officers’ investigation, police determined that a driver headed south had been struck by a tire that came off a vehicle in the northbound lanes.”

Why do you think it is necessary to keep posting these type articles. Terrible things happen all over the world.

Hey Robert.

I often get nightmares of having my wheels falling off my car. And since I’m physically disabled and unable to perform strenuous activities, torquing my wheels myself isn’t possible.

This is why I now and then go to a tire shop and ask them to tighten the wheel nuts for me.

I’m not sure if doing so is necessary ( someone coukd comment to enlighten me ). But I worry all the time about this issue.

I watch a lot of car related videos and see things like these all the time. It’s truly scary.

What’s the automotive equivalent of a hypochondriac?

I hope you mean ‘and ask them to check the wheel nuts’. You DON’T want them tightened every time, they’re probably fine.

Got to be safe than sorry, right ? I actually suffer from anxiety. I worry about small things. But I realize the more knowledge I gain about various topics, the more I experience anxiety attacks.

It seems like it should work the other way around.

Would they torque the nuts more than they should if I told them to tighten the nuts ?

If yes, I’ll make sure to tell them to “check” next time rather than to tell them to tighten them.

Wheels coming off is extremely rare compared to the millions of miles driven.

Whomever puts on new tires should torque them to vehicle specs, so they would not come off.

Some tire store person probably was distracted and forgot he did not torque the last wheel.

So just ask them to re check incase something was forgotten. (I watch them do it, then ask them to overinflate the 52 PSI Max. tires to 45 PSI.)

Robert the hypocardriac.

When I was young, I would speed a lot. I loved speeding. Never once it had occurred to me that an impact at only 50mph could be fatal. Then I watched a documentary on speed. Holly cow !

P.s. I used to drive very far away from home, too. Ignorant and naive and felt completely comfortable behind the wheels. But that changed when I invested some time into watching some educational videos, from getting hijacked at gas station, speeding, tires falling off trucks on the highway and killing oeople, ohhh hell yea, it makes sense I don’t touch the road unless necessary.

??? Isn’t the thrill of speeding, or driving recklessly, or doing anything “exciting” knowing that something could go seriously wrong? Isn’t that what makes it fun and makes you love it in the first place?

Freefall skydiving is a thrill like no other, and things could very easily go wrong and be fatal. That’s why it’s so fun!

Because it is so unusual.
Years ago I saw a nice wheel rolling east down a slight grade on I-70 in the mountains. Was not going fast but rolled over a hundred yards on the shoulder. Think (hope) I saved the dash cam video.

No. I don’t think people engage in risky activities with the knowledge something could go terribly wrong.

At least not for me. I engaged in risky driving habits as a mean to test my potential. It’s like running one mile in 3 minutes. You want to run faster to see if you can beat your record of 3 minutes within a mile.

It is often said ignorance is bliss. Lack of knowledge about unpleasant realities can lead to greater happiness and peace of mind,

That doesn’t mean I want to remain ignorant. Knowing stuff makes you behave better but at the same time “for some “ that can cause anxiety.

You need to talk to your doctor about it, they make medications just for high anxiety/anxiety attacks… Maybe even talk to a psychotherapist, most insurance providers will pay for it, your doctor can even recommend you see one…

Even having a calm dog in the passenger seat can help out…

Since you are having these anxiety attacks, you should be researching how to deal with them, rather than researching the things in life that give you high anxiety/attacks that odds are will never happen to you…

I lost a wheel in my second year of track racing cars. After I hit a tire wall at 50 mph, and the dust settled, I felt elation that I wasn’t hurt.

Since we all race in the same direction and the wheel went away from corner workers and spectators, there was no risk of injury to anyone else. But I never thought of it until just now.

We race for the thrill knowing we can get hurt but we do it anyway.

Not unlike road driving. Not so much thrill but we all know we can get hurt or killed just driving to the store. But the odds are in our favor and that is enough for me.

We have. It’s on my medical record and is listed as “ well controlled “ without medication.

It is not severe enough to warrant being prescribed drugs for My Dr. often tells me to try distracting myself from thinking negatively, and assures me that even himself worries about the small things at times but he tries to distract his mind from leading to that path of negativity

Like you said, chances are good that I’d never experience the stuff I worry about.

The news report is vague at best, it says “after a tire from a vehicle in the northbound lanes became loose and crashed into a driver headed south” which infers the tire “came off” the other vehicle. But does not says it was one of the driving tires…

Further on in the report, it says. “The driver who lost the tires pulled over to the shoulder and stayed at the scene.” And that infers that multiple tires fell of the vehicle as if the tires were cargo, possibly in the back of a truck… And the report says the driver pulled over and stayed at the scene. That again suggests the vehicle losing the tires was not disabled.

The reports were early and it’s bad reporting or lazy editing, so, let hold judgment until more information comes out…

But you aren’t doing that, you are doing the opposite and LOOKING for things to worry about...

If you took your doctors advise you would have:

So you either A) need to take meds to help your over anxiety out, or B) STOP watching so much stuff that gives you high anxiety… IMHO

And even if it happens to you, most of the time it is unavoidable, so why even bother worrying about it, there is nothing you can do about it anyway!!!..

When I ran the stopped school bus and rushed to CarTalk, my anxiety did flare up so bad because of some of the comments here suggesting I should not be driving and that I was a hazard on the road. I remember that night where I couldn’t sleep. Had to call my sister and tell her maybe I should resign from driving. She was weirded out by me saying that and told me that my anxiety was out of control. She’s a doctor by the way.

When I hired the lawyer I told him the same thing — that it was time to hang up the flag. All I could hear in my head from reading the negative comments here was “ You should not be driving. You are going to hurt someone. Thank God I don’t travel on the road you drive on “.

My lawyer said to ignore those negative comments because running a school bus is a weekly occurrence and nothing unusual about it.

After the issue was solved and I settled down, I realized how stupid anxiety can make one look.

Worry about the things in life that you can control, like being bitten by a shark, if you stay out of water with sharks in them, you will never be bitten by a shark etc etc, but the things you basically have no control over, like other drivers/things on the road and around the round, you don’t have any, or very little control over, so don’t worry about those things…

The things to worry about are things like, will I be late to an appointment due to heavy traffic from a wreck up ahead, that you have very little control over other than taking an alternate route or something, or worry about if the power will go out when the big storm hits, those things (can) happen often, snow storms etc, but everyday driving and an object hitting your vehicle and the like is not something that happens all the time… I have been driving for 40 years and have never had most of these things happen, but I have and often have the power go out during a thunder storm, been snowed in a few times here in the south, been worried if my check after paying the bills will be enough to feed my family, that is the stuff to worry about in life, you know stuff like will all the handicap spots be taken when I get to x place and I have to park way out…
