Loose tire rolls? and hits vehicle, killing driver

Not really adding anything but sharing a story…when I was 18 a friend of mine was driving northbound on the freeway when a southbound semi lost a trailer wheel. The wheel bounced over the center divider and went into the windshield of her Subaru Brat. They said she died instantly.

The confidence of youth seems to soften the blow of untimely death, but the older I get the sadder that memory becomes.

I was pulling two 45’ trailers down the NY State Thruway eastbound between Batavia when a set of wheels along with the brake drum as a unit came off the right side of my lead trailer and hit the dolly leg on the rear trailer whcih sent it careening down into the median and back op over the westbound lanes narrowly passing over a car going tle other way. The cause was wheel beating failure.

I thought I had avoided an accident but the driver of the Hundai Excel pulled over and wayed to me. When I got to hih he pointed out a slot in his windshield and we found a bearing roller melted into his carpet.

I had to wait for the state police and fill out an accident report in the patrol car which took about an hour and on half then wait 4 hours for NY Thruway inspectors to come out, fill out another accident reportand they inspected the equipment and they decertified the tractor, both trailers and the tandem dolly for doubles operation due to lack of maintenence and I had to shuttle bothe trailers to the nearest doubles compound and got to my meeting placewith the drive coming from MA.with only one trailer and we had to exchange the rigs, each one giving up our stedy tractor.

I never saw my tractor again because the company went bankrupt a month later.

Trucking was regulated in the depression with the ICC setting the rates so that all trucking companies had to charge the same rates so that all trucking companies could afford to maintain the equipment. In 1980 Jimmy Carter signed the bill deregulating trucking and all of the union companies that I worked for are now out of business and the professional standards of both drivers and companies have gone downhill ever since.

The masin beneficiaries of thios had been large corporations that get much lower prices and the small shippers pay much higher prices and have trouble getting service because no one has to take their freight.

Some large shippers who need timely service like Walmart have had to get their own fleets because they cannot get dependable service using owner operators who may offload your freight into a warehouse for a while while they get the opportunity for a better paying load.

I have been ever grateful that set of wheels did not injure anyone. It weighed well over 300 pounds. It company sent someone out to look for . It disappeared into a vast cornfield bordered with forest and was never found.

I don’t have a cute answer yet, disappointed a little dealer oil change today, did not check trans fluid level and condition, sure I’ll do it myself, checked it right after I bought the used car, nothing, took it to the dealer, salesman called a tech, put on the brakes and put it in drive, was a llittle tan but the level was fine, so had a change done, would pay extra to have trans fluid level and condition check, brake fluid check for needing flush, coolant check for condition, transfer case fluid level and condition, differential oil level and condition, guess that makes me an automaniac.

EXACTLY. Only worry about the things you have control over.

There is no need to stop swimming in the ocean. Taking actions to avoid attracting sharks is a good way to avoid them. Don’t wear shiny swimsuits, sharks are attracted. Don’t wear dark swimsuits, you may be mistaken for a seal. Don’t swim at dawn or dusk, that’s when sharks are most active. Don’t flail in the water, sharks are attracted to the activity. Finally, don’t swim too far out. Great white sharks routinely swim close to the beach in ten-foot deep water.

These steps will limit an already highly unlikely occurrence and can help limit shark anxiety. It’s a bit like driving defensively. Knowing your limits, remaining within them, and anticipating trouble can reduce road anxiety significantly.

If someone is extremely anxious about traffic circles/roundabouts, it is usually possible to avoid them by taking a different route. Similarly, if having to keep-up with the prevailing speed of traffic on an expressway gives one angst, then sticking to secondary roads is a good idea.

My wife’s aunt did that. She and her husband sold their home in Baltimore and moved to Newark, DE. The family still lived in and around Baltimore. She was able to drive on I-95 for a while, but the 70 mph speed limit was too fast for her as she aged. Her solution was to use US40 instead, with a speed limit of 55 mph. She still didn’t go the speed limit, but going 45 or 50 on US40 was a lot less scary than on I-95.

I swim close to small children, sharks consider them nuggets, easier to eat and swallow😀

Much like tornadoes, I live within a mile of a trailer park, tornadoes go there rather than to my house.

Similarly, you don’t have to be able to outrun a Grizzly bear. You just have to be able to outrun your hiking companion.

That is crazy, looks like a wheel bearing failure…

Yeah, and the driver would say that the wheel just came off with no warning…when you and I know that bearing was bad for months before.

Haha, I had a customer pull into the parking lot and as soon as he got out of the vehicle, the wheel area caught fire, we ran out and put it out quickly, but that could have been bad..

Had another customer, from out of state, came rolling in with the front tire leaning in bad and making a bad grinding noise, as we were pulling it into the shop, bearings were hitting the ground…
If they would have kept driving, the wheel would have came off and it was an oversized AT tire off a lifted truck…

Had an elderly lady pull in one day and said her car was making a strange noise, as the tech made a U-turn to pull it into a bay, the ball joint separated and the control arm hit the ground… I went in and said I have good news and bad news, good news is we found the problem and I pointed to her car with the wheel kicked way out…
